Root Canals

Root Canal Treatment by Experts with Ultimate Care

Severe tooth pain, lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, or swelling around a tooth are all signs that something is going on inside, and the sooner it’s addressed, the better. At our Phoenix practice, we provide root canal treatment that’s focused on two things: relieving your discomfort quickly and saving your natural tooth whenever possible.

Root canals have a reputation that’s far worse than the reality. With modern techniques and local anesthesia, the procedure is typically no more uncomfortable than getting a filling. In fact, most patients are surprised by how manageable it is, because the pain they felt before treatment was the real problem, not the treatment itself.

If you’ve been putting off a toothache or sensitivity that won’t go away, please don’t wait. Tooth infections don’t resolve on their own, and catching them early makes treatment straightforward. Our team is here to help you get comfortable and get your oral health back on track.

What Is Root Canal Treatment?

Inside every tooth is a soft inner layer called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. When bacteria reach the pulp, typically through deep decay, a crack, or trauma, the pulp can become infected or inflamed, causing significant pain and, if untreated, an abscess.

Root canal treatment removes the infected or damaged pulp, thoroughly cleans and disinfects the inner canals of the tooth, and seals everything to prevent reinfection. The tooth is then restored, usually with a crown, and can go on to function normally for many years, often a lifetime.

The goal is always to save the natural tooth. A tooth that can be treated and restored is almost always preferable to extraction, both for your oral health and your wallet.

Symptoms That May Indicate You Need a Root Canal

  • Persistent or severe toothache, especially when biting down
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after the source is removed
  • Swollen, tender, or discolored gum tissue near the tooth
  • A tooth that has darkened or discolored
  • A small pimple-like bump on the gum near the affected tooth
  • Pain that radiates to the jaw or wakes you up at night
  • A bad taste or odor that doesn’t clear up with brushing
  • A tooth that feels loose

Not every toothache requires a root canal, but these symptoms warrant prompt evaluation. Coming in sooner gives you the best chance of a straightforward fix.

Root Canal Treatment Options

Standard Root Canal Treatment

The most common scenario, treating an infected or inflamed tooth over one or two appointments. We remove the pulp, clean and shape the canals, seal everything, and restore the tooth with a crown. This is highly effective and predictable for most cases.

Single-Visit Root Canal

In many straightforward cases, root canal treatment can be completed in a single appointment. This is convenient and perfectly appropriate when the clinical situation allows for it.

Root Canal Retreatment

Occasionally, a tooth that’s had root canal treatment in the past may develop new symptoms or signs of reinfection. Retreatment involves reopening the tooth, removing any remaining infected material, resealing it, and restoring the crown. This approach can often save a tooth that might otherwise require extraction.

Apicoectomy

In cases where infection persists at the tip of the root despite standard root canal treatment, a minor surgical procedure called an apicoectomy can address the remaining infection directly. It’s less common but effective when needed.

Pediatric Pulp Therapy

Children with infected baby teeth may need a version of root canal treatment called pulp therapy. Treating infected baby teeth is important, premature loss can affect the spacing and development of permanent teeth.

Why Saving Your Natural Tooth Matters

  • Maintains your natural bite and prevents neighboring teeth from shifting
  • Preserves the bone and gum tissue around the tooth
  • More cost-effective than extraction plus a replacement
  • A properly treated and restored tooth can last a lifetime with good oral hygiene
  • Eliminates the pain and health risks caused by untreated infection

What to Expect During Root Canal Treatment

  1. Consultation and X-rays: We evaluate your symptoms and take imaging to assess the extent of infection.
  2. Treatment planning: We explain what we found and walk you through the recommended procedure.
  3. Local anesthesia: The area is thoroughly numbed before we begin. Comfort is our priority.
  4. Pulp removal: The infected or inflamed tissue is carefully removed from the canals.
  5. Cleaning and shaping: The canals are cleaned, shaped, and disinfected.
  6. Sealing: The canals are filled with a biocompatible material and sealed.
  7. Restoration: A crown or filling is placed to protect and restore the tooth.

Frequently Asked Questions About Root Canal Treatment

  1. Is root canal treatment painful?
The procedure is done under local anesthesia and should be essentially pain-free. Most patients are genuinely surprised by how comfortable it is.
  1. How long does it take?
Most root canals are completed in 60 to 90 minutes. Some cases require a second visit for the final restoration.
  1. Can I eat after the procedure?
Yes, though we recommend avoiding hard foods until your permanent restoration is in place and the area has fully healed.
  1. How long will the treated tooth last?
A properly treated and restored tooth can last many years — often a lifetime — with good oral hygiene and regular check-ups.
  1. What happens if I delay treatment?
Untreated dental infections can spread to surrounding teeth, the jawbone, and in serious cases beyond the mouth. They can also lead to tooth loss. Don’t wait.
  1. Do I need a crown after a root canal?
In most cases, yes. A crown protects the treated tooth from fracture and restores its strength and appearance.
  1. What are the alternatives to a root canal?
The main alternative is extraction. While that removes the source of infection, it also means losing the tooth — and then managing the space. We typically recommend root canal treatment to try to save the tooth first.
  1. How much does root canal treatment cost in Phoenix?
Costs vary depending on which tooth is involved and the complexity of the case. We’ll provide a clear estimate before starting and go over all payment options.

I first went to Dr. Sadre at Gentle Hands Dentistry for a regular checkup and cleaning. She came highly recommended and since I was looking for a new dentist, it was an easy choice. I was not disappointed. It’s not just finding a dentist, but finding a practice where I feel appreciated as a patient and where I found a more “old-fashioned” atmosphere where you feel like they care, and remember you each time. Equally important are skilled dental hygienists. The best hygienist ever is here. Asia is calm, efficient and such a pro. If she notices something I could do better in caring for my teeth, she’ll let me know, and I appreciate that. Dr. Sadre is not just an excellent dentist, but she's an artist. I needed to have my right front tooth fixed — rebuilt from breaking it years ago for a better description. She matched the shape and the color perfectly. It looks absolutely perfect; better than the original.

I absolutely love this dentist. They’re amazing from the front office all the way to the dentist Shanna and Tia in the front office are super friendly and amazing at their job and make people feel comfortable and the Dennis and her assistance care about you and how you feel I went there for two root canals, and three crowns, and not only was it affordable, unlike the other dentist that I went to, but she made me feel like part of their family not only that but she she didn’t like the way that one of my crowns fit so she didn’t let me just walk out the door like most dentistry places would. She took it out and said she was going to redo it, which is unlike anything most other practices would do . I highly recommend her. There’s a reason their name is Gentle Hand Dentistry. I had two root canals and I swear I didn’t feel a thing and no I wasn’t asleep. The other Janice, I went to try to make me pay for anesthesia just cause he didn’t wanna deal with me, but really I don’t even see why that she’s just that amazing at her job that I didn’t feel the thing.
